Inspired by the Prairies and Created with Love
“Inspired by the prairies and created with love,” a catchy phrase meant to summarize my creative practice, and more specifically my pottery pieces. Mary Oliver writes in her poem “Sometimes”: “Instructions for Living a Life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” (from “Sometimes,” Red Bird). If I was to imagine these three statements as three interlocking circles, creating pottery, for me, is the third circle “Tell about it,” the end result of paying attention and being astonished. You’ll see this same thread in my photography and my poetry.
I live just outside a small village in Saskatchewan and all around me is the prairie, in all its macro and micro beauty. From the prairie skies to the eyes of a dragonfly, there is so much to capture the imagination and, of course, inspire.
I hope when you look at my pottery, you’ll see the colours of a prairie sunset/sunrise, or the wood grain of a tree, or one of the many creatures or plants you might encounter here. You will notice I have the odd ocean creature, or a piece that looks like the red rock of the Arizona desert, but these too represent places I’ve been and hold close to my heart. Again, I hope to “Tell about it!”
Thank you for taking a look, and if you buy a piece of Lara Dawn Pottery, you are receiving a piece of my home. Much love to you!
